Photography Niche

What is Your Niche?

You don’t have to be a professional to know the different kinds of photos. There’s always something out there for someone. Whether it’s taking pictures of people, capturing a starry night, or cool cars, photography is something that can catch the eyes of anyone. It all comes down to perspective and what you may like, as a photographer or someone who likes to look.

What is My Niche?

I’m almost a month into my photography journey and have narrowed down my specialties to three categories: 1) Portrait Photography, and 2) Street Photography

Now I aim to become more adventurous and try other styles and genres of the art. Right now I’ve found something that works for me and something that I enjoy. The experience that I’ve had with my clients has allowed me to appreciate building a connection of photographer and the subject. Seeing the smiles on their faces when taking a look at the results, having small talk, and making an impact with pictures means something to me.

I aim to provide that feeling of joy and confidence with my clients as much as I can, while also learning more about photography.

Doing Something Different

I was excited to learn more about the different avenues of photography. I was blown away by the opportunities that could come my way.

I stumbled across wedding photography and “boudoir” photography. Out of curiosity, I looked into the boudoir genre. Usually with most viewers, I was caught with the confidence and the essence being displayed by the subject.

This is where I began to go ONLY with my emotions instead of thinking straight:

As a way to boost traffic to my site, I decided to add boudoir to the list of services I provided.

WHERE I WENT WRONG

I was led to believe that listing a service that a certain demographic would want would gain more attraction as a novice photographer; This is where I messed up!

I had “boudoir” on the my services page for almost a week. It was during that time when I began to feel two things…. “dirty” and “shame”. I was only satisfying my pleasures thinking that I would gain clients like this. It was disgusting. Most of all, I realized it wasn’t me. Taking photos of clients with a certain piece of wardrobe was something I couldn’t stomach. It also didn’t help that I had no experience with boudoir photography or any work I could show in my portfolio.

This is where I began to look to deep into this. I began to notice that certain people weren’t hitting me up to book a session, as if they were keeping their distance from me. I soon began to fall under the assumption that people thought that I was a weirdo, a creep.

What Has Finding a Niche Taught Me

If there’s one thing that stood out to me throughout finding my niche for the first time it’s this:

I learned who I was. I’m not the person who finds pleasure in taking those kinds of pictures. I soon began to value regular headshots or full-body portraits. Even after having a talk with one of my loved ones knocked some sense into me.

I also understood that many folks will have a certain perception of you based on the work you do. There are certain times, as a photographer, when other’s judgement doesn’t matter. It is, however, something to consider when embarking on your photography journey. You may see people acting differently than they have before, or might even cut you off.

There are many road bumps that you and I are bound to face as photographers and people just trying to make it in life. The best thing that we can do is keep moving onward, take on new challenges, and put our best effort our there while doing this:

NEVER LOSE TOUCH OF WHO YOU ARE…. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF!
